Since 1990, the Swiss Federal Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research Davos (SLF) has documented avalanche accidents in which an ABS avalanche backpack was used.

THE BEST SURVIVAL TECHNIQUE IN AN AVALANCHE IS TO NOT GET BURRIED IN THE FIRST PLACE!
- Outside the ski area boundary and in the backcountry one must be prepared for the possibility of an avalanche. This applies to everybody even when conditions are optimal.
- Do not solely rely on your companions as they may be buried as well.
- Do not solely rely on an avalanche beacon as the rescue team has only 15 minutes to locate AND rescue you.
- Even with help from the most experienced person retrieving a buried person alive is difficult. With an average avalanche approximately two cubic meters of compressed avalanche debris must be removed in order to rescue and resuscitate a victim from a burial depth of 1 meter.
- The ABS airbag system can prevent you from being buried and speeds up the rescue due to the visibility airbags.
